Christchurch History Society
Christine Payne, Chair
Christchurch Junior School
Join us to study local history in the community. We are custodians of a large archive of materials (some 16,000 documents, photos, maps, etc.) relating to Christchurch and its history.
We hold ten monthly evening meetings from September to June at Christchurch Junior School. Our talks are usually on local history or historical events affecting Christchurch. Entrance is £2 for members, £5 for guests.
We run stalls at various local events, eg Mudeford Arts Festival. We hold exhibitions in, eg, the Central Library and the Regent Centre. We also run Guided Walks in the summer around historic Christchurch. Membership is £13 single, £18 two at the same address. We are looking for new members willing to help in running the Society, especially if they have IT skills.
Our Society is dedicated to the study of the past of this ancient borough and the preservation of all aspects of our surviving heritage. We are unusual in having an archive collection to manage, as well as all the other aspects of a thriving organisation, including regular talks, events, Quarterly Journal and a programme of projects and initiatives to further our cause.
We are a totally volunteer-based society that was formed in 1989 to promote and encourage the public study of local history in the community.
We have published and continue to publish numerous local history themed books and booklets.
We are the custodians of a large archive of material relating to Christchurch that has been collected by various local historians over the last 100 years. This provides a unique source of material for the family history researcher or anyone interested in the buildings, industries and heritage of the local area.
With an extensive archive of over 20,000 books, old documents and photographs, as well as access to copies of the local newspapers from 1855 to 1933 we can help you learn more about the people, events, and places that have created the Christchurch we know today as well as assisting you with family history.
The Society has a programme of ten monthly talks. September to June, often attracting audiences of over 90 people
