THREE GENERATIONS EXHIBITION
Image1 image3 Image 4

I am putting on this exhibition to show off my late mother’s (Iris Hughes) talent as an embroiderer on the recommendation of one of her City & Guilds tutors, Yvonne Morton. My mother had been a member of the Bournemouth Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild until her death in 1990.
I am selling her work with all money going to the Royal Marsden Hospital.

I (Wendy Harvey) love textiles and dabble in all kinds of stitching. I have knitted for Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably, Edina Ronay, and have designed and knitted for Stella McCartney. I like to combine some of my embroidery with my photography, another of my hobbies. I am a member of the Christchurch Branch of West Country Embroiderers, the Embroiderers’ Guild and CADARTs.

Jane, my elder daughter, worked in a small pottery in East Sussex for seven years before going to university in Cardiff (UWIC) where she gained a first class BA Honours in Ceramics. Since then she has had her own studios and supplied galleries in the U.K. and Sweden. Her lamps and other pieces are inspired mainly by natural forms, from microscopic pollen grains to planets.

My younger daughter Frances, a Bournemouth University graduate, has always had an interest in crafts, including knitting, lacemaking and sewing. She works in film, but fits in sewing whenever she can. She has just returned from a few months in Norway, where she made up for her lack of a sewing machine by hand sewing and patchworking items that will be on sale.

My love affair with art began over eight years ago when I was on top of Table Mountain, South Africa. I was so completely over-awed by the magnificent view of Cape Town and Lion Mountain that I started to sketch on a scrap of paper and never looked back.
I found a tutor where I was living in Peitermaritzburg and another when I eventually returned to Scotland — A Master of Fine Arts at Edinburgh University. When I was in India I was able to work with Subodh Kerkar in Goa. He is a well known installation artist with galleries in Mumbai, Calcutta and Goa.
